Man faces attempted murder charge over stabbing death of a friend

An Illinois man faces attempted murder charges after killing his friend in what police describe as a dispute over a cigarette lighter, officials said Tuesday.

Riley Hinton, 22, of Champaign, was found by his mother late Sunday with a cut wound to his chest and was being treated at a hospital in Joliet.

A relative of Hinton's, 24-year-old Michael Jones, called the shooting a "cowardly act of domestic terrorism."

Jones was charged Tuesday and is being held in the Algonquin County Jail on $25,000 bond, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. He will remain in Algonquin County on a $25,000 bond. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. on the 2200 block of University Place SW.

Hinton, who was shot in the head, is listed in fair condition at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was released from Lake County Jail Tuesday after posting an $1,000 bond.

WATR-TV - CHARLOTTE, NC (WKRN) - A deadly coal ash spill is forcing the closure of some towns across eastern North Carolina.

A truck driving along I-85 near the town of Beaufort pulled into an intersection at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The scene turned dark as authorities gathered.

Some residents said it was difficult to walk a block after the spill.

The National Guard responded to the accident with a massive decontamination effort and workers have been combing areas for oil and coal debris and working to make sure the area is completely cleaned off the roads.

But after hours, people are left scratching their heads as to how the truck was so badly damaged and where the spill occurred.

There's no word on how many trees were damaged or how much coal was spilled. Officials are hopeful it will be resolved soon.

The state Department of Environmental Quality has already released a number of cleanup reports to the public. They are currently providing the following information regarding the accident in Beaufort:

WRT-TV is told a DTE employee was riding his truck into the trucker's area, while he and a customer were inside the burning mine. They were both trapped inside.

DTE workers discovered the accident and were on the scene about 45 minutes after the accident occurred.

The road was closed around 8 p.m., after the company sent a letter saying it was safe to return to work and they have sent out a notification about its impact.

The incident in Beaufort is just one of an estimated 300 coal ash spills involving DTE Energy, according to the company's website.

DTE has been cleaning up the coal ash spills in the area.

Officials say that in addition to the 7,000-acre spill cleanup efforts, DTE crews are preparing for an area of the spill that involves 400,000 acres as well as the area surrounding the coal ash dump.

The largest coal ash spill, the 1.6 million ton leak in Marcellus Shale in PA, has caused a number of road closures to be made.
